Szkic, Hoyerswerda

In the summer of 1977 Antonina is at Hoyerswerda, in East Germany, at a sculpture symposium: eight weeks of hammer and chisel on a block of sandstone, which will become the first «Civilisation». This sheet is what she does in the meantime — a house with a pitched roof traced in a blue line, a row of trees, the bank of a ditch, all in coloured pencil on pink paper, in half an hour.

It is the oldest evidence of a habit her path will repeat for thirty years: wherever she goes to carve, she paints. Zamość, Turośl, Sarnówek, the Reymontówka — the places of the stones are also the places of the sheets.
