The work
A bust in patinated plaster: a young figure, the face without pupils, and in the chest a rectangular opening cut clean through. Inside the opening, resting on the bottom, a round, smooth form — a loaf of bread.
«Za chlebem» is the Polish phrase for leaving to find work — going away «for bread». The work appears in the catalogue of the national sculpture survey «Tendencje i osobowości», at the Zachęta in Warsaw in 1979, where it is recorded with its measurement: patinated plaster, eighty centimetres.
