The work
The first work made for the open air: 1970, the city park of Płock. A group of great ovoid forms in mahogany; in one of them, as at the crossing of a threshold, a child is carved gathered in on itself — on the threshold of life, says the title.
It is also the first appearance of the device that will carry the work for forty years: a closed volume that opens and holds someone. It returns in the painting of 1981, in the bronze of the year after, in the sphere that parts over a newborn, in the bronze books that lock shut. Here it is still as tall as a person and stands out of doors, on the grass of a park: whoever passes can look inside without stooping.
