The work
On the sheet another sheet is drawn: a grey-blue rectangle hung on a nail, with its eyelet at the top right. Across that cloth runs the red outline of a human figure — round head, sloping shoulders, a body — and inside the outline, in place of the body, there is a landscape: sky, grass, brown earth, a few dry stalks. At the centre of the landscape, in full light, a yellow wooden chair, empty.
At the lower right, in pencil, the name of the place and the date: Zamość, 8 November 1978. That same year one of her limestones, «Dziecko na chwilę», is set up in a park in the town: here too the paper travels with the stone. And the figure that opens and houses something else is an idea that will return for years — here it appears on one precise afternoon, far from home.
