The work

In August 1988, in eight days, Antonina fills at least seven sheets and signs each one with the name of the place: Sarnówek. On the 17th the wooded bank with its wooden fence; on the 19th the lake seen through the branches of a pine, the far shore reduced to a band of fields; on the 22nd the water at sunset, the sky in pink and yellow bands and three white sails in the distance; on the 23rd a spray of wild rose with a single flower at its tip; on the 24th, twice on the same day, a sheaf of dry reeds and the lake again, but grey.

They are watercolours painted on the spot, and it shows: the colour is laid down quickly, the paper is left bare where the sheet must breathe, the drawing does not go back to correct itself. In a single week her whole idea of landscape is there — the wide view and the close detail, the water and the plant, taken with the same brush.
