The work
Smętek, the spirit of melancholy in Polish folklore, is a trunk a metre and a half high in which dark walnut makes the shell and pale poplar surfaces in the opening. It is one of her earliest works: at the great exhibition «25 years of Warsaw sculpture», at the Zachęta across 1969 and 1970, the young sculptor shows two works only — this one and its companion, W uwięzi.
