The work
The first Civilisation is made in the summer of 1977 at the symposium of Hoyerswerda, in East Germany: a figure surfacing from the sandstone. The local press follows the work day by day — «Sie bilden das “Lied vom Glück”», writes the Lausitzer Rundschau that August.
In Germany the work is called simply «Leben», life, and it stands in the old town park that today bears the name of Jürgen von Woyski, the sculptor who directed the symposium: there all eight sculptures of that summer were gathered.
