The work
A child sleeps curled inside a hollow of bronze that wraps it like a nest; below, the material turns rough and irregular, and the small sculpture rests on a base of grey granite.
The form is not born here. The year before, Antonina paints a canvas bearing the same title, and in that canvas everything is already there: a mass that opens into an almond-shaped opening, and inside the opening the gathered child. Between the painting and the bronze only one thing changes: the opening, from a painted aperture, becomes a cavity. And the device comes from further back still: from a group of mahogany pieces left in a park at Płock in 1970, where one of the masses parts in the same way over a seated child.
Barely fifteen centimetres: it is on show at Siedlce in 2009, in one of the two cases of the solo exhibition, among the table pieces the artist never stopped making alongside the great wooden works and the park stones.
